10/7/2016 7:30:00 PMFrederic Chiu - Piano With over 20 CDs on the market, Frederic Chiu's repertoire includes the complete work of Prokofiev as well as popular classics of Chopin, Liszt and others, and lesser known masterpieces of Mendelssohn and Rossini, with a special place for the piano transcription. Many have been singled out, such as "Record of the Year" by Stereo Review, "Top 10 recordings" by the New Yorker, with raves from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. ………………………………………………………………… Frederic was the recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Petscheck Award of the Juilliard School, and was a fellow of the American Pianist Association. He was also the "non-winner" of the 1993 Van Cliburn Competition, where his elimination from the finals caused an uproar in the press. ………………………………………………………………… Since this concert is on a Friday, we will be starting at our normal time; appetizers and wine being served at 7:30 and the concert starting a bit after 8:00.
11/11/2016 7:30:00 PMKathleen Winkler / Timothy Pitts - Violin / Double Bass Kathleen Winkler and Timothy Pitts sort of play the same instrument; however one rests comfortably under the chin and the other stands very tall. You will hear both ends of the wide range available with string instruments performed by two highly acomplished performers and educators. ………………………………………………………………… Kathleen Winkler is a chaired Professor of Violin at Rice's Shepherd School of Music. Timothy Pitts is Professor of Double Bass at the Shepherd School of Music and former principal bass of the Houston Symphony. ………………………………………………………………… Since this concert is on a Friday, we will be starting at our normal time; appetizers and wine being served at 7:30 and the concert starting a bit after 8:00.
1/22/2017 6:30:00 PMFerenc Illenyi and his Gypsy Band Our first concert of 2017 brings back the group that stretched our seating capacity to its limits; adding extra seats twice with people still left on the waiting list. And they didn't disappoint. ……………………………………………………………… Houston Symphony violinist Ferenc Illenyi will lead his Gypsy Band through an eclectic evening of rhythms, classical interpretations, and jazz improvisations taken from Gypsy styles in Central and Eastern Europe. ……………………………………………………………… This will be a concert that either you were thrilled to have attended or very sorry to have missed! ………………………………………………………………… Since this concert is on a Sunday, we will be starting one hour earlier than normal; appetizers and wine being served at 6:30 and the concert starting a bit after 7:00.
2/24/2017 7:30:00 PMJudy Dines / Rodney Waters This will be the third appearance of Judy Dines with the Woodlands Salon Series. Judy has been a flutist with the Houston Symphony for almost 25 year. 4/2/2017 6:30:00 PMRobert Atherholt and Ben Kamins with students from Rice Shepherd School For our fifth year in a row, we are having a concert comprised of faculty and students of Rice's Shepherd School of Music. These concerts are always a delight as the extremely talented Shepherd School students have the energy and enthusiam that fills the room. The faculty are not just highly accomplished musicians, they have great communication skills not only for the students, but for the audience as well. The perfect complement for a Salon Concert. ………………………………………………………………… This year the program is being pulled together by Robert Atherholt, Professor of Oboe and will include Professor of Bassoon, Ben Kamins (who started the facult/student concerts for us), 3 wind instrument students plus continuo (piano). ………………………………………………………………… Since this concert is on a Sunday, we will be starting one hour earlier than normal; appetizers and wine being served at 6:30 and the concert starting a bit after 7:00.
5/7/2017 6:30:00 PMEric Halen / Scott Holshouser As is our tradition, we conclude the season with our favorite pair of musicians, Eric Halen (Associate Concertmaster of the Houston Symphony) and Scott Holshouser (Principal Keyboard of the Houston Symphony). Eric and Scott's recitals at the Woodlands Salon Series have consistently drawn some of our largest audiences. ………………………………………………………………… We hope to have a few special guest artists at this performance. ………………………………………………………………… Since this concert is on a Sunday, we will be starting one hour earlier than normal; appetizers and wine being served at 6:30 and the concert starting a bit after 7:00.
